A new synthesis of 2,2′-bi-1,5-naphthyridine (1) is described along with its reactions with copper(II) nitrate, silver(I) tetrafluoroborate and palladium(II) chloride. X-ray crystal structures are described of a mononuclear copper complex, in which 1 acts as a convergent ligand chelating through the two internal nitrogens, and an unusual M4L3 silver complex containing both two- and three-coordinate silvers and with ligand 1 acting in two different bridging modes.
