A cyanide-bridged Ni9Mo6 cluster (1) capped with chelating bidentate ligands was prepared by self-assembling [Mo(CN)8]3−, Ni2+, and bipyridine in a stoichiometric ratio. Compound 1 crystallized in the triclinic system with space group P1¯ shows a body-centered Ni cube capped with six Mo entities. The non-covalent π–π stackings present in 1 lead to the extension of the molecule to a 2D sheet. Magnetic data exhibit that intracluster ferromagnetic interactions in 1 are operative through the CN linkage coupled with zero-field splitting of the cluster with an S = 12 ground state.
