Abstract

The 1N-(2-pyridyl-2-methyl)-2-arylazo aniline, HL [where HL = ArNNC6H4N(H)(CH2C5H4N); ArC6H5 (for HL1) or p-MeC6H4 (for HL2) or p-ClC6H4 (for HL3)], ligands were prepared by treating the appropriate 2-(arylazo) aniline with 2-chloromethyl pyridine. Reactions of Na2PdCl4 with HL afforded (L)PdCl complexes. HL binds palladium(II) in a tridentate fashion (N,N,N) forming a new diazoketiminato chelate, dissociating the amino proton. The X-ray structure of (L1)PdCl was determined.

Graphical abstractTransition metal complexes incorporating polydentate azo ligands are demonstrated to possess interesting electron transfer behaviour and photophysical properties due to the presence of a low lying azo-π∗ orbital. This work describes the synthesis and structure of new Pd(II) complexes of a delocalised tridentate (N,N,N) ligand forming a six membered diazoketiminato chelate.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slide
