Abstract

Studies of the known single-molecule magnet {[(tacn)6Fe8(μ3-O)2(μ2-OH)12]Br7(H2O)}Br · 8H2O complex, tacn = 1,4,7-triazacyclononane, in an aqueous solution and in the powder state have been carried out with the aim of characterizing the stability of the Fe8 cluster in an aqueous solution. The characterization involves IR, UV–Vis, NMR (Evans method) and Mössbauer spectroscopies, as well as dc-magnetic susceptibility and magnetization studies. Both spectroscopic and magnetic measurements clearly show the lack of stability of the Fe8 cluster in an aqueous solution.

Graphical abstractWe report on the characterization of the single molecular magnet (SMM) {[(tacn)6Fe8μ3-O2(μ2-OH)12]Br7(H2O)]}Br · 8H2O, tacn = 1,4,7-triazacyclononane in aqueous solution. Spectroscopic and magnetic measurements evidence the lack of stability of the complex in aqueous solution.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slide
