The synthesis and characterization of Cu(3,5-tBu2-salophen) (4) and VO(3,5-tBu2-salophen) (5) as well as the crystallographic elucidation of the structures are reported. X-ray analyses show the expected approximately square planar geometry of copper (II) and the square pyramidal geometry of vanadium in structures 4 and 5, respectively. Both discrete molecular structures are well defined with no obvious hydrogen bonding present. The EPR spectra of 4 and 5 are typical of complexes of this type. 3,5-tBu2-salophen = N,N′–phenylenebis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylideneimine).
