A brief survey is provided of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), or molecular nanomagnets. The [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H2O)4] (Mn12; R = various) family of SMMs continues to be the one with the highest blocking temperatures, and the one on which the most detailed studies are being performed within the chemistry and physics communities. For this reason, methods have been developed for their controlled modification in various ways, and these are summarized. In addition, new SMMs continue to be sought to improve knowledge of this phenomenon, and several representative examples of new synthetic procedures and the resulting products are described.
