Metal organic complex, [Zn(lp)2Br2] (DBPZ), (lp = l-proline) was synthesized and single crystals were grown by solution growth technique. It was characterized by FT-IR, FT-1H NMR, single crystal X-ray diffraction and UV–Vis–NIR absorption studies. Structure analysis shows that Zn(II) is coordinated by two Br− ligand and two l-proline ligand to complete a distorted tetrahedral. The complex DBPZ crystallizes in orthorhombic crystal system with space group P212121. The DBPZ crystals exhibit second harmonic generation. The magnetic property of DBPZ was investigated in solid state at room temperature and it shows soft magnetic properties. The thermal stability of the compound was evaluated by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis.
► Novel single crystal of DBPZ grown from saturated solution. ► Metal–ligand coordination, structural and hydrogen bonding are discussed. ► Orthorhombic P212121 enantiomorphic space group exhibit SHG properties. ► At room temperature DBPZ possess soft magnetic properties.
