Abstract
After reviewing the theories accounting for the adoption of central bank independence, the research note examines how well they apply to the British case. It appears British constitutional reforms and political imperatives, reinforced by global developments, best explain the 1997 reform of the Bank of England. The note ends with a caution about the trend toward central bank independence.
