Abstract

•A new (C9N4H28)Cd7(H2O)2Cl18·nH2O(n = 5.89) an unusual cadmium chloride was synthesized.•In the complex, five Cd(II) ions to form double chains and two Cd(II) to form tetramers.•The coordination environment of the cadmium ions is distorted octahedral.•The crystal packing is ensured by hydrogen bonds.•This material was also investigated by IR and CP-MAS NMR spectroscopies.

The inorganic–organic hybrid compound (C9N4H28)Cd7(H2O)2Cl18·nH2O(n = 5.89) features an unusual cadmium chloride structure. The title complex adopts a layered structure consisting of double-chains and tetramers of [Cdϕ6] (ϕ = Cl, O) octahedra. Crystallization water molecules and [C9H28N4]4+ tetracations are located in interstices of the successive corrugated layers. This compound has also been investigated by FT-IR and solid-state 13C, 15N CP-MAS and 2D 13C-H NMR spectroscopies.
