Abstract

•A gold(III)dithiocarbamato complex (2) was synthesized in good yield.•The complex (2) was characterized by single crystal XRD and spectroscopic techniques.•The supramolecular structure suggests its potential for DNA binding.•The synthesized complex exhibits impressive antioxidant activity.•The synthesized complex has good DNA binding ability.

A gold complex of molecular formula (MeOCH2CH2)2NCS2AuCl2 was prepared and characterized by NMR (1H and 13C) and UV–Visible spectroscopy in solution. The solid state structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. The complex structure reveals that geometry around gold metal is almost square planar and all five atoms, AuS2Cl2 appear in the same plan. The complex bears acute angle S1–Au–S2 in the expected range (75.46°) owing to the bidentate nature of the dithiocarbamate ligand. Some short range intra and intermolecular interactions were observed which are very important for bonding with biological molecules such as DNA. The resultant complex was tested for its DNA binding and antioxidant activities. The results showed that the complex is efficient when compared with the reported standard drug.
