•Two rare aqua bridged copper(II) based linear polymers have been synthesized.•These polymers were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography.•Empty channels have been observed between the linear chains of complexes.•Covalent interactions like OH⋯O, CH⋯O and CH⋯π has been observed.
Reaction of copper(II) 2-bromobenzoate with β/γ-picoline in methanol–water mixture (4:1 v/v) yielded two isostructural aqua bridged linear polymers [Cu(2-bromobenzoate)2(β-picoline)2(μ-H2O)]n; 1 and [Cu(2-bromobenzoate)2(γ-picoline)2(μ-H2O)]n; 2 which belong to a rare class. The newly synthesized complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV–Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray structure determination. Both complexes crystallized in triclinic space group, P1¯. X-ray structure determination revealed the presence of 1-dimensional chains of constituent molecules running along a-axis. Empty channels have been observed between the linear chains of complexes. Non-covalent interactions like OH⋯O, CH⋯O and CH⋯π have been observed which play a decisive role in the stabilization of crystal lattice in both complexes 1 and 2.
