•Synthesis and X-ray structure of the title compound.•Temperature dependent Mössbauer spectroscopy.•Vibrational amplitudes of the Sn atom.
The compound {o-(Ph2P)C6H4}2Sn(CH3)2 was rigorously purified and examined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies at three different temperatures and by temperature-dependent Mössbauer effect (ME) determination at 8 temperatures in the interval 87 < T < 245 K. The oxidation state of the metal atom is Sn(IV) and the absence of a resolvable quadrupole interaction in the ME data confirms previous results for Sn ligated only to C atoms, despite the obvious absence of Td or Oh symmetry. The vibrational amplitudes inferred from the ME data are compared to the XRD data at three different temperatures and to a related solid.
