Abstract

This paper raises issues involved in doing research in partnership with Native American communities. The paper explores methodological concerns such as: access and cooperation, protocol, culturally appropriate methods, and ineffective methods. Integral to this discussion are the rights of the Native American communities and the responsibilities of the researchers. Specific topics include: getting started on a project, control of the research project, negotiating the release of the information gathered during the project, recognition for involvement in the research, and other ethical issues.
