Abstract
⺠Two classical supramolecular synthons form associates in solution. ⺠Steric effects of substituents present in both counterparts drive association. ⺠DFT calculations predict the properties of hydrogen bonds explaining observations. ⺠Compounds with bulky groups do not dimerize but form heteroassociates.
