The self-assembly reactions of the polymers CuS2P(OMe)2 or CuS2P(OEt)2 with 4,4′-bipyridine(4,4′-bipy) under mild conditions gave a novel two-dimensional network {[CuS2P(OMe)2](4,4′-bipy)0.5}n (1) and two novel polymeric chains {[CuS2P(OMe)2]4(4,4′-bipy)}n (2) and {[CuS2P(OEt)2](4,4′-bipy)0.5}n (3). Complex 1 represents the first layered structure incorporating intriguing linear {CuS2P(OMe)2}n building blocks in the CuDDP (DDP=general dialkyl dithiophosphate) system. Complex 2 is the first one-dimensional polymer with {CuS2P(OMe)2}4 fragments connected by 4,4′-bipy ligands while 3 is also the first hanging ladder-like chain with 4,4′-bipy ligands as cross rungs in this system. Complexes 1–3 exhibit strong photoluminescence with the peak maximum at 681, 578 and 644 nm respectively.
