Abstract

•The crack front velocity depends on the load-bearing capacity of the specimen.•The crack front velocity can be as high as 0.76cR, where cR is the Rayleigh wave speed.•FEA has to be used to analyze the stress distribution with large deflections.

A high speed camera imaging technique is used to capture the dynamic fracturing process of thin strengthened glass under biaxial tensile loading with modified ring-on-ring configurations. Crack fronts emit radially from the fracture origin. The crack front velocity depends on the load-bearing capacity of the specimen and can be as high as 0.76cR, where cR is the Rayleigh wave speed. Finite element analysis (FEA) is used to analyze the stress distribution associated with large deflections accounting for the specific loading fixture geometry.
