Abstract

In this work, we report the study of energy transfer between Nd3 + and Yb3 + ions in GeS2–Ga2S3–CsCl chalcohalide glasses at room temperature by using steady-state and time-resolved laser spectroscopy. The study includes absorption, emission, and excitation spectra, as well as lifetime measurements. The presence of Yb3 + emission after excitation in the 4F5/2 level of Nd3 + together with the 4I9/2 → 4F5/2 and 4I9/2 → 4F3/2 bands of Nd3 + in the excitation spectra of Yb3 + ions confirm that energy transfer occurs from Nd3 + to Yb3 +. The transfer efficiency was investigated from the emission spectra. Back transfer from Yb3 + to Nd3 + was also observed in the emission spectra of the codoped samples after excitation of Yb3 + ions.

► The existence of Nd3 + → Yb3 + energy transfer in chalcohalide glasses is demonstrated after excitation in the 4F5/2 level of Nd3 +. ► The energy transfer efficiency has been estimated from the spectral data. ► Back transfer from Yb3 + to Nd3 + is also observed.
