Abstract

Density distribution around Vickers indentation on commercial glasses, such as aluminoborosilicate glass and soda-lime silicate glass, was investigated by using micro Raman spectroscopy. Samples of the glasses were subject to high hydrostatic pressure by means of a multi-anvil apparatus, to prepare densified samples. Raman band shift of the densified sample was found to have a relationship with the hydrostatic pressure or density. By Raman spectrum mapping, the density distribution around the indentation for each glass was identified. It was found that there is a densified zone around the indentation in both two glasses. Compared with the soda-lime silicate glass, the aluminoborosilicate glass showed the broader region with higher densification around the indentation.

► Raman spectrum of highly compressed glass shifts according to density. ► Density distribution around Vickers indentation in glass was measured. ► Alumonoborosilicate glass shows more densification than soda-lime silicate glass.
