Abstract

Negative ions play significant role in various branches of Physics, ranging from Astrophysics, Atmospheric Physics and Plasma Physics to Accelerators physics. Negative hydrogen ions are also good illustration for electron correlations effect that is why special attention has been paid to Photo-detachment of negative ions. It is observed that photo-detachment cross-section shows oscillatory behavior near any interface and form Newton rings on an observational plane. These Newton rings have been used to find electron affinity of negative atomic ions in photo-detachment microscopy experiments. Here, using Theoretical Imaging Method and quantum mechanics, we derived an analytical expression for differential cross section of H− ions; the detached electron waves interfere and form Newton rings on the observational plane. By counting number of fringes from these Newton rings and taking into account the concepts of Einstein photoelectric effect, we are then able to determine the electron affinity of Hydrogen negative ions. We find these results may agree better with the experimental results.
