Abstract

•A critical overview of acute and chronic wound diagnostic parameters•Key trends in electroanalytical approaches to monitoring wound healing•Critical appraisal of emerging possibilities for electrochemical wound sensors

At present, there is a clear requirement for the development of new sensors or the translation of existing systems for the point of care management of chronic wounds. The availability of such devices could significantly improve clinical outcome — particularly in the early identification of infection. This review identifies electrochemical research strategies that are being targeted at wound diagnostics and provides a critical overview of emerging research that could be pivotal in setting the direction for future devices.
