•We present the first entirely water free ITIES.•This water free ITIES also has an ionic liquid as one of its components.•The ITIES has a polarisable window of 150 mV.•Impedance measurements have established the point of zero charge.
The voltammetry of the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions formed from 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,6-dibromohexane or a 1,2-dichloroethane/cyclohexane mixture (all with supporting electrolyte) with the ionic liquids ethylammonium nitrate, 1-butyl-3-H-imidazolium nitrate or 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride was studied. Only ethylammonium nitrate interfaces were found to be polarisable, with potential windows of over 150 mV. Electrochemical impedance measurements were fitted to a Randles circuit to locate the point of zero charge.
