Abstract

A novel Pt-based bimetallic electrocatalyst, hollow mesoporous Pt–Ni nanospheres (HMPNNs), has been synthesized by an efficient route. The HMPNN exhibits the superior electrocatalytic performance in methanol oxidation reactions with greatly enhancing Pt utilization efficiency due to its unique structure and very large electrochemical surface area.

► Hollow mesoporous Pt–Ni nanocatalysts are synthesized by a facile approach. ► The catalyst exhibits the superior electrocatalytic performance in MORs. ► The catalyst can greatly lower Pt utilization compared with commercial catalyst. ► The catalyst can find use in catalysis, fuel cells, and other related fields.
