Abstract
The assignment of lepton number its violation and its relation to neutrino masses is investigated in several versions of the SU(3)c⊗SU(3)L⊗U(1)x model. Spontaneous and explicit violation and conservation of the lepton number are considered. For a particular model, the Majoron is gauged away, providing in this way the longitudinal component to a now massive gauge field.
