Abstract
The purpose of this talk is to review the ability (and the limits) of a perturbative QCD approach in describing the available data on heavy quark production at various high-energy colliders. We shall not discuss the possible modifications induced by production in a dense medium, but rather try to establish the validity of a benchmark on top of which such effects could be investigated.
