Abstract

A domain-wall brane in a 5d E6×Z2 gauge theory is derived. The clash of symmetries mechanism breaks this symmetry down to two differently embedded SO(10)×U(1) subgroups on opposite sides of the wall. Their intersection gives SU(5)×U(1)×U(1) as the unbroken symmetry inside the wall. The Dvali-Shifman mechanism is used to argue that the SU(5) gauge bosons are dynamically localised to the wall. Coupling 5d fermions in the 27 of E6 to the wall gives rises to 4d localised chiral zero modes having the quantum numbers of a standard model family with two right-handed neutrinos. The model thus realises an effective low-energy 4d SU(5) grand unified theory dynamically confined to the brane, and with further symmetry breakdown may form the basis for a realistic 5d extension of the standard model.
