Abstract

In the last decade neutrinos provided many impressive results/surprises and their relevance in the understanding of the “Next Physics Scenario” should be largely acknowledged. Neutrino oscillations have so far established a beautiful picture, consistent with the mixing of three physical neutrino νe,νμ and ντ and mass eigenstates ν1,ν2 and ν3. However it might very well be that neutrinos be something other than just a neutral counterpart of charged leptons (in line with the quantitative and incomprehensible differences between the leptonic and quark sectors) leaving room for additional neutrinos which do not see the ordinary electro-weak interactions but still follow mixing oscillations with ordinary neutrinos. Several “anomalies” have been collected in the last decade, too, not experimentally confirmed, yet, which may correspond to the presence of larger squared mass differences related to additional neutrino states, with presumably some kind of “sterile” nature. We will focus on the “short term” quest for the possible existence of sterile neutrinos with a new experiment to be placed in the truly new project at CERN of a Short-Base-Line Neutrino beam Facility (SBLNF).
