Abstract
A new interpretation of the spectrum of scalar mesons from χb0(9860) down to σ(485) is suggested in which scalar mesons have a and a four-quark component. The four-quark component becomes increasingly important with decreasing quark mass. The flavor singlet light-quark mesons form the wide background which is interspersed with narrow octet states. There are no states beyond the quark-model classification.
