Abstract

Neutrino mass ordering, mixing, and potential for CP violation are some of the most important questions facing particle physics today. To address them, a Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) is being planned using a 700 kw beam that would be directed from Fermilab to an underground site in Lead, South Dakota – a baseline of 1300 km. At this site, one or more large detectors are being planned that would not only provide sufficient mass for a precision long baseline oscillation experiment, but also be sensitive to neutrino bursts from supernovae, proton decay, and cosmic ray neutrinos. The major components of the design and expected physics sensitivity are presented.
