Abstract

•Study uses a HPGe detector and Si(Li) based Mini Orange electron transporter.•EγEγ and pγpγ were determined for 44 gamma transitions and 8 x-rays in the decay.•ICE were measured for 7 intense transitions which will add to the total beta dose.•New data on IβIβ,EβEβ to 15 levels of 153Eu is determined with uncertainties.•A new self consistent decay scheme is constructed for 153Sm using GTOL.•The study throws light on the weak and ambiguous gammas reported previously.•The EγEγ dataset resolves ambiguities on placement of transitions to the levels.•The log ft   values calculated may be used to assign JπJπ to as yet unassigned levels.•The study fill the gaps in the nuclear decay data compilations.

The decay of 153Sm was studied with a HPGe detector and a Si(Li) detector based electron transporter. Forty four gamma transitions belonging to sixteen excited levels in the daughter nucleus 153Eu were analyzed for their energies, emission intensities, conversion electron intensities and conversion coefficients. These values have resulted in the determination of precise beta emission intensities to the levels in 153Eu and in the construction of an internally consistent decay scheme. The present study will add to the decay data available on this radionuclide for reliable dose estimations for medical applications.
