Abstract
⺠Al-M is an engineered fungal defensin with the n-loop of an insect defensin. ⺠Al-M adopts a native defensin-like structure with high antibacterial potency. ⺠Al-M kills bacteria through a membrane disruptive mechanism. ⺠This work sheds light on the functional evolution of CSαβ-type defensins.
