Abstract
⺠Eye lens α-crystallin (AC) is a heteropolymer with αA and αB subunits in 3:1 ratio. ⺠α-Crystallin prevents the aggregation of other lens proteins. ⺠At high temperatures αB aggregates and also enhances the aggregation of β-crystallin. ⺠αA-Crystallin, but not a mutant αA-crystallin, reduced coaggregation of αB- and β-crystallin. ⺠The data provide a basis for α-crystallin with a specific αA to αB ratio to maintain eye lens transparency.
