Abstract

The deposition of lipoproteins at a range of surfaces was investigated by in situ ellipsometry in the context of lipoprotein plaque formation in atherosclerosis. While simplistic, it was found that Ca2 + − induced lipoprotein deposition at surfaces coated with either an endothelial cell monolayer or heparan sulfate proteoglycan would indeed appear to provide accelerated information on initial atherosclerotic plaque formation, as evidenced by correlations to well-known clinical effects of lipoprotein composition and of statin treatment on lipoprotein deposition. In analogy, the approach also seems to pick up on clinical effects of lipoprotein compositions and β-amyloid in Alzheimer’s.
