Abstract
Acute stroke assessment and treatment occurs most often in the emergency department setting. However, patients who have been admitted for other medical conditions or procedures may have a heightened risk of stroke. Education and development of protocols to direct the actions of nurses and health care providers are helpful to expedite notification of the stroke team and diagnostic evaluation. Timely recognition and involvement of the stroke team can lead to improved outcomes.
