Abstract
Hearing screening in newborns was introduced to clinical practice almost over the world in 1960-ies. At the beginning it was limited to a group of high risk neonates, now it became universal. The paper presents a development of diagnostic techniques used in checking of newborn hearing. Behavioral techniques were used at the begining, then follow breathing electroimpedantography, crib-o-gram, auditory response cradle and contemporary screening methods auditory brainstem responses and evoked otoemissions respectively. The role of organization of newborn hearing screening are also presented with particular attention on the Polish programme started in 2002.
