Abstract
The clinical course of bacterial meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae in ten children, admitted to the Department of Infectious Diseases, Regional Hospital Centre for Mother and Child in PoznaÅ in the period from 2002 to 2004, are presented. We analyzed the medical history, clinical signs and course of disease, laboratory and other investigations. It was found that some children had predisposing factors and very frequent, pre-existing diseases which probably were the focus of Streptococcus pneumoniae invasive infection. We describe the long-term sequelae of the disease, current standards of treatment, and possibility of prophylaxis by two types of vaccines: for young children <2 years old (conjugate vaccines) and older children (polysacharide vaccines).
