Abstract
The neonates in the 21st century are under special treatment at hospital departments designed especially for them. It was not like that before. During the centuries the death of children - particularly those weak and sick - was accepted. On the other hand the history of neonatal intensive care is longer than expected. Although the first special care baby unit was created in 1960's, the way of reviving neonates in asphyxia was sought science ancient times. As the years went by the newborns were taken under more and more careful attention. The new methods of resuscitation and the concepts of neonatal care were invented in order to keep as many live born neonates alive as possible. The technological development resulted in advance of neonatal intensive care. The present-day units are full of essential and sophisticated medical equipment (like incubators, respirators, monitors). It is worth to study the step-by-step evolution of neonatal intensive care and to know these concepts which are the foundations of this branch of medicine as well as those which were completely missed.
