Abstract
Standard ultrasound imaging has become a basic tool in diagnosis and treatment of many adult diseases. The scope of clinical symptoms diagnosed thanks to ultrasound is still increasing. Introduction of the apatrus working in real-time and additionally equipped with high and sometimes variable frequency ultrasonic probes has decisively increased the possibilities of recognising gastroinestinal diseases in children. While examining children it is possible to use higher frequency ultrasound probes compared to adults, thanks to the almost limitless signal penetration which is unfortunately present in obese adults. However it is advisable to notice the characteristic abnormalities of the childhood period. Modern ultrasound technics such as colour-Doppler, power-Doppler, harmonic imaging (real-time) or three dimensional imaging has greatly improved the quality of the assesed images. This study presents modern usage of the ultrasound in diagnosis and treatment of the selected gastrointestinal childhood diseases, including its characteristic symptoms and course, specific for the developmental period, indications to verification of the aptitude and restrictions of examination in this period.
