Abstract
Atherosclerosis starts in childhood and develops with age. Its intensity depends on risk factors, such as overweight and obesity, disturbed lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, arterial hypertension, and smoking. The prevalence of these factors in Polish children and young adults is high and requires implementation of prevention measures to improve nutrition, increase physical activity and decrease smoking prevalence. It is necessary to work out and implement a prevention programme that would apply to the whole population.
