Abstract
Primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases based on early identification of persons from the high-risk group for atherosclerosis and interventions leading to modification of these factors should include children and adolescents. Atherosclerosis is a chronic process beginning in childhood, modified by genetical and environmental factors. Initially intima cells are destroyed, then ahterosclerotic plaque containing mainly cholesterol and its esters, is formed. In the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, significant role is played by hemostatic and fibrinolytic factors and infections.
