ObjectivesTo discuss the history, current state, and future directions of umbilical cord blood (UCB) transplantation as it relates to the emerging field of cellular therapies.Data SourcesResearch studies, articles, and personal experiences.ConclusionTransplantation using hematopoietic stem cells from UCB is a life-saving option for patients with select oncologic and immunologic diseases, bone marrow failure, hemoglobinopathies, and inborn errors of metabolism.
