Abstract
Weight loss >2% occurred in children with severe, chronic diseases (e.g. cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, celiac disease) and who stayed in the hospital more than 2 weeks. Well-nourished children do not carry a nutritional risk due to hospitalization for other medical reasons. Special attention should be given to patients with mild malnutrition on admission since they seem to be at higher risk of adverse effects of hospitalization.
