Abstract
Mitral valve prolaps (MVP) is an abnormal movement of one/both mitral valve leaflets or a part of mitral valve leaflet into the left atrium during systole. Based on its etiopathology MVP is divided into primary and secondary mitral valve prolaps. Coexistence of MVP and clinical symptoms is called Barlow syndrome. Clinical manifestations of Barlow syndrome are heterogeneous and they are closely connected with instability of the autonomic nervous system. An overall favorable prognosis is characteristic of MVP, although the presence of complications is connected with poorer prognosis and in these case pharmacotherapy or surgical treatment might be necessary.
