ZusammenfassungAls Verbandsarzt des American Football Verbandes Deutschland (AFVD) und Teamarzt der Deutschen American Football Mannschaft beschäftige ich mich seit vielen Jahren mit den sportmedizinischen Aspekten dieser amerikanischen Nationalsportart und einem der Themenschwerpunkte beim Jahreskongress der Gesellschaft für orthopädische und traumatologische Sportmedizin (GOTS) 2011. Ein Anlass, die Geschichte dieses harten Sports in seinem Heimatland aber auch in Deutschland zu erzählen. Des Weiteren ergänzen eine kurze Skizzierung der Regeln des American Football, ein Einblick in die Verletzungsepidemiologie sowie eigene sportmedizinische Erfahrungen aus der NFL, dem Collegefootball und aus der Betreuung der Deutschen Nationalmannschaft diesen Überblick.
As the head physician of the German American Football Association (AFVD) and team physician of the German national team in American Football I am treating the sports medicine aspects of this sport that is one of the main topics in the 2011 annual meeting of the GOTS. A reason to explain the history of this violent sport in its home country as well as in Germany. This review includes a short chapter about the rules of American Football, a glance at the epidemiology of injuries, and my own experiences from the NFL, College football and the German national team.
