SummaryRegenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering deals with regeneration of tissues and organs, which are not able to heal by nature, by means of biotechnology. The use of cells, biomaterials and regulators – like growth factors – are the specific tools of this technology. Cells are used from autologous or allogeneic resources from the specific tissue or mesenchymal stem cells are harvested from bone marrow or fat. Biomaterials used for this techniques are natural or synthetic polymers or copolymers, like collagen, hyaluronan or synthetic polyglycols. Cell-matrix interaction with the biomaterial, cell culture conditions and the use of growth factors allow to guide the tissue engineering process and produce certain tissue characteristics. However, although the full regeneration of the specific tissues is not yet achieved by these methods the aim is to regnerate tissue instead of insufficient repair.
