Abstract

SummaryAlthough large parts of a basketball game take place overhead, injuries to the shoulder region remain rare. In the literature injuries of the upper extremity are reported with about 25% of the cases, although hand and finger injuries dominate. With the help of a questionnaire, 351 male and female basketball players from 41 top division teams in Germany reported a total of 1385 injuries. The isolated review of injuries to the shoulder and upper arm revealed only 49 injuries (3.5%). In women's basketball the injury rate was 3.1%, while the men reported 3.9%. No significant differences were found in regard to level of play, experience or position of the players. In basketball acute injuries of the shoulder region are separations of the AC joint and shoulder dislocations, while the overuse syndromes are frequently chronic instabilities, impingement syndromes and tendonitis.
