Abstract
Advancements in the treatment of myocardial infarction such as coronary care units, patient education, improved emergency response systems, and reperfusion therapy have reduced mortality. However, in an effort to further reduce the present rate by improving patency rates and microcirculatory perfusion, by better preserving myocardium, and/or treating shock more effectively, more research is under way to improve strategies now in place and to develop new, more effective ways to treat these patients.
