Abstract
Hypertensive heart disease is due to the action of arterial hypertension that causes different clinical conditions in the heart such as left ventricular hypertrophy, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and coronary disease. Given the prolonged time that a patient may have the hypertensive condition, antihypertensive treatment should be offered. This treatment should not only assure optimum blood pressure control but also prevent the appearance of target organ lesion or that this progresses once established. In this sense, the angiotensin receptor antagonists have demonstrated their efficacy in the treatment of left ventricular hypertrophy, heart failure, ischemic heart disease and atrial fibrillation.
