Abstract
The Fontan operation has offered many children with single ventricle congenital heart disease survival. As technology, operative technique, critical care medicine have improved, more of these children are surviving into adulthood. Unfortunately, as the number of survivors increases, so does the recognition of the long-term consequences of Fontan anatomy and physiology. Hopefully, novel techniques will emerge to treat or prevent these complications, and provide for prolonged survival in this challenging patient population.
