Abstract
The aim of this article was to provide a descriptive overview of current approaches to the treatment of dyslipidemia in Spain and of the changes that have taken place in recent years, based on information available in the literature. The emphasis is on aspects of treatment that could be improved and on areas of uncertainty. In general, the information available indicates that although overall there have been substantial improvements relative to previous years, the incidence of hypercholesterolemia in the Spanish population remains high and treatment for the condition could be improved. With regard to secondary prevention, there has been a substantial increase in the prescription rate of lipid-lowering drugs, especially statins. However, therapeutic goals are achieved less frequently in Spain than in neighboring countries.
