Abstract
Cardiac electrophysiology is rapidly becoming a subspecialty within cardiology for which additional education and training are required. Consequently, there is a need to promote and certify appropriate standards for the training and qualification of practitioners. Such qualifications should be recognized or accredited for reference of health administrations, professionals and users of cardiac electrophysiology services. The document presented here was drawn up by the Working Group on Electrophysiology and Arrhythmias of the Spanish Society of Cardiology and describes a particular system of accreditation in cardiac electrophysiology for health professionals and training centers. To become accredited, an individual must be a cardiology specialist, have received special training for at least 1 year in a center accredited for the purpose, and have passed a proficiency test of cardiac electrophysiology. In addition, an accredited training center must be located in a cardiology department that meets minimum standards for clinical training, teaching and research, as detailed here.
